Geeksphone, a Spanish retailer has listed two handsets running Firefox mobile OS, available for purchase online by interested developers from today onwards. The two phones, also manufactured by Geeksphone, namely- the Keon and the Peak, boast of hardware that belongs on a budget and a mid-range smartphone, respectively. Both phones were expected to be made available in February of this year but the launch was delayed.
The Keon is powered by a single-core Snapdragon S1 processor clocked at 1GHz and 512MB of RAM. It has a 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 320×240 pixels, a 3MP camera and a 1580 mAh battery. Geeksphone has the phone listed for 110 Euros (Rs. 7,800 approx.). The Peak is a more powerful device as its specs prove. The Peak has a 4.3-inch qHD IPS display and is powered by a dual-core Snapdragon s4 processor clocked at 1.2GHz of RAM. It also boasts of 512MB of RAM, an 8MP primary camera (along with a 2MP front-facing one), and a battery rated at 1800 mAh. Geeksphone is selling the Peak for 179 Euros (Rs. 12,700 approx.).
While the Keon and the Peak are available in limited quantities and are aimed primarily at developers, the first mainstream handsets hitting the market that will run Firefox OS will be the ZTE Open and the Alcatel One Touch Fire. Both handsets will be launched in select countries in Asia, South America and Europe but unfortunately, not in India (as yet). Sony has expressed an interest in launching a Firefox OS powered phone based on the Xperia E but that device has yet to be officially confirmed. Apart from Sony, LG has also revealed that it would like to use Firefox OS to power the smartwatch line-up that it’s currently developing.
