Facebook to drop support for BlackBerry OS soon
The announcement was made on BlackBerry’s official site and comes soon after WhatsApp announced that it will ending support for the OS.
Facebook will no longer be supporting BlackBerry’s mobile operating system, revealed BlackBerry’s Lou Gazzola, Senior Marketing Manager for Developer Relations, on the company’s official blog. This comes after another Facebook-owned service, WhatsApp, announced that it was ending support for certain operating systems, including BlackBerry’s.
In the blog post, Gazzola said that the company is “extremely disappointed” with Facebook’s decision and that BlackBerry tried to get the social media giant to change its minds. However, as of now, the decision stands. The company has tried to keep a positive outlook and stated, “Despite this, we have worked hard to ensure our end users have the best experience in light of this decision, and are continuing to search for alternate solutions.”
It is not known exactly when will Facebook withdraw support for the OS, as BlackBerry-made Facebook apps are still available on BlackBerry’s app store. It should also be noted that BlackBerry’s newest device, the Priv, is powered by Google’s Android OS, and not BlackBerry 10. In addition, BlackBerry may make a mid-range Android-powered phone this year, if the Priv becomes a success in terms of business.
