MediaTek is likely to launch a new chipset meant for the Indian market at India Mobile Congress tomorrow. The new chipset will have a quad-core CPU and is meant for mid to entry level Android smartphones. It uses ARM’s Cortex A53 architecture and will support 18:9 displays. Sources said that the new chipset will even bring support for dual-cameras and bring enhanced noise reduction algorithms. While the exact model number for the chipset isn’t known at the moment, sources say it is going to be an upgrade to the MediaTek MT6737 SoC. The MT6737 chipset runs on phones like the Moto E4, which could mean that the new chipset is also aimed at devices in the same price range.
This seems in line with MediaTek’s strategy in India so far. The company has usually focused on the budget market, although MediaTek does have plans to focus more on what it calls the “new premium” segment with its Helio P series. The new premium segment refers to the sub-20k segment, where OEMs routinely launch devices with above average specifications.
MediaTek had recently announced the Helio P23 and Helio P30 chipsets, both of which support dual-SIM cards and 4G VoLTE capabilities. The Helio P23 boasts dual-4G and dual-VoLTE capabilities, and the entry segment chip to be launch tomorrow is expected to have the same.
