Cheaters prosper: Samsung, most Android phonemakers cheat in benchmarks

HIGHLIGHTS

New tests conducted by Anandtech show that most Android phones have been tweaked to perform better when running certain benchmarks.

Anandtech has revealed that it’s not just Samsung that’s ‘cheating’ to get good benchmark scores on its devices but rather all Android phone makers, except for Motorola (Anandtech was also unable to procure test devices from Sony). Anandtech tested a wide variety of Android devices and found that most of them have been tweaked to boost performance (over normal levels) when running certain benchmarks.

Earlier, the cone of suspicion was trained exclusively on Samsung when it was found that the Galaxy S4 was pushing its CPU and/or GPU beyond normal limits in order to get high scores in certain benchmarks. With this new revelation, it seems that the only two companies that are clearly not ‘cheating’ when it comes to benchmarks are Apple and Motorola. Anandtech also seemed surprised by the fact that the Android manufacturers were tweaking performance to just get about 0 to 5% jump in CPU benchmarks and up to 10% in GPU benchmarks, numbers that seem relatively insignificant to warrant a concerted attempt to skew those figures.

Take a look at the phones Anandtech tested in the table below and to get a more detailed analysis of the tests conducted, head on over to the Anandtech story.
