BSNL will now offer 2Mbps minimum speed, effective from October 1
HIGHLIGHTS

The newly-effected bandwidth speed will only be accessible pre-FUP data consumption, and revert back to 512kbps once the limit is crossed.

State-run network provider BSNL will be raising the minimum speed of its broadband connection to 2mbps, effective from October 1. Hence, any user currently on a 512Kbps or 1mbps plan, will now be upgraded to a 2mbps connection.

The 2Mbps bandwidth speed will only be accessible pre-FUP (Fair Usage Policy) data consumption. Once data limit is crossed, speeds will drop down to 512kbps. This new upgrade is applicable to existing as well as new users. BSNL has been facing stiff competition from private telecoms. Earlier this year, it was reported that it was going to slash 3G tariffs by 50%. BSNL had also announced that it was going to offer free calls during night hours. Any call made between 9 pm and 7 am on a BSNL fixed line was also declared free.

The telecom operator had also decided to not participate in the spectrum auction that was held earlier this year. In fact, they had not participated in the spectrum auction held in November 2012, March 2013, and February 2014. As per data released by TRAI in September 2014, BSNL was the fifth-largest service provider in the country. The top spot was held by Bharti Airtel, followed by Vodafone, Idea Cellular and Reliance Communications.

It seems like BSNL still has a long way to go in order to catch up with the private telecom operators in India. Airtel has already launched its 4G services in India, while Vodafone and Reliance are gearing up to launch their own 4G services.
