Will BlackBerry’s next QWERTY smartphone run on Android?

HIGHLIGHTS

BlackBerry had apparently showcased the device very briefly at the MWC this year. It sports a curved screen and a sliding keyboard.

Canadian smartphone maker BlackBerry is working on an Android-based smartphone, says a report by Reuters. According to the reports, the device will have a sliding physical keyboard and will run on Android OS, instead of the company’s BB10 platform. The report also indicates that this is the same smartphone that BlackBerry showcased, very briefly, at the MWC 2015 tech event in Barcelona this year. The device was a curved screen smartphone with a slider physical keyboard.

The move would mark an admission by BlackBerry that it’s BB10 line of smartphones have given no competition to Android and iOS devices. The once smartphone giant currently owns a market share of less than one percent, with even business users opting for Apple iPhones or other Android-based devices. The recently launched BlackBerry Passport smartphone didn't receive accolades either.

There’s no real indication as to whether BlackBerry plans to continue its endeavours with BB10 though. BlackBerry’s enterprise security services are still a step ahead of its competitors and are used by many government and corporate agencies.
