BlackBerry rolling out Android Marshmallow update for Priv
The Android Marshmallow v6.0 update for the BlackBerry Priv offers users more ways to monitor and control their privacy, and also improves upon certain features of the phone
BlackBerry has started rolling out the Android Marshmallow v6.0 update for the Priv smartphone. The update offers users more ways to monitor and control privacy via the DTEK app and also improves upon other features of the phone such as the keyboard, battery performance, camera, and more. John Chen, Executive Chairman and CEO, BlackBerry, said in a statement, “PRIV by BlackBerry is the most secure Android device in the market and we continue to find ways to further enhance users’ security and privacy by adding new features with the Marshmallow operating system update.”
The Android Marshmallow update for the BlackBerry Priv, will allow users to turn app permissions off at any time via DTEK and still continue to use the app. Users will also be shown notification controls only for those sensors that an app has requested access to. In addition, S/MIME feature in BlackBerry Hub will now allow users to digitally sign and encrypt their emails.
The BlackBerry Keyboard has also been improved via the update. Users will now be able to uses gesture typing on the virtual and physical keyboard. It also offers enhanced word prediction and better cursor control. In addition, users now have access to over 200 new and updated emojis.
The update will also add a mute indicator to the device, which allow users to see the device’s mute status at a glance. Additionally, users will now be able to view notifications from new apps like Instagram, Skype, Slack, and Pinterest in the BlackBerry Hub. The BlackBerry Hub has also been updated, and now organises apps into Recent, Personal, and Work sections.
BlackBerry says that the Priv will now offer improved battery life thanks to the Doze and App Standby features. In addition, the update will allow users to record videos in 24fps in 4K, 1080p, 720p resolution. Users will now be able to record videos in slow motion by capturing at 120fps and playing it back at 30fps. The company adds that this slow motion effect can be applied after taking a video. However, BlackBerry notes that currently audio is not enabled for slow motion videos.
