Best mid-range smartphones with a pop-up front camera

Updated on 18-Feb-2020

Smartphone manufacturers have finally managed to get rid of the thick bezels that used to surround the screen of smartphones. However, as companies shaved off these bezels, there arose the issue of where to place the front camera. Some manufacturers chose to place the camera in a notch on the display. However, the notch design can block some of the view, which can be a little annoying at times. As such, smartphone makers came up with the pop-up front camera design in which the front camera is pushed up from inside the body via a pop-up mechanism. With this system in place, manufacturers could get rid of the notch and offer a much higher screen-to-body ratio.

Realme X

The Realme X packs a 6.53-inch AMOLED display with an FHD+ resolution of 2340x1080p. Thanks to the pop-up front camera design, the device is able to boast of a screen-to-body ratio of 91.2%. Speaking of the camera, the smartphone offers a 16MP Sony IMX471 sensor that is protected with sapphire glass. The company claims that the mechanism takes 0.74 seconds to pop-up and has been tested to do so over 200,000 times. On the back, users get a dual-rear camera setup with a 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor that is aided by a secondary 5MP sensor. In terms of performance, the Realme X is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 SoC, and it is available with up to 8GB RAM. Other features of the device include support for VOOC 3.0 fast charging.

Oppo K3

The Oppo K3 smartphone also comes with a 16MP front facing camera. It has a mechanism that retracts the front camera module if it detects that the device has been dropped. This helps ensure that the module does not get damaged in case the phone is dropped. Further, Oppo promises that the module should last for five years without issues. Thanks to the pop-up camera design, the 6.5-inch AMOLED display is said to offer a screen-to-body ratio of 91.1%. Over on the rear of the phone is a dual-camera setup with a 16MP+2MP configuration. The Oppo K3 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 SoC with up to 8GB RAM. Other features of the phone include an in-display fingerprint sensor, and a 3765mAH battery with support for VOOC 3.0 flash charging.

Huawei Y9 Prime 2019

The Huawei Y9 Prime too features a 16MP pop-up front camera and the company claims that it has gone to great lengths to ensure durability. Huawei claims that the module can withstand 15Kg of weight and has been tested over 100,000 times. The Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 also offers a number of AI-based features such as real-time image optimisation. At the back of the phone is a triple-camera setup with a 16MP+8MP+2MP configuration. The 16MP sensor is the primary sensor, while the 2MP sensor is used for depth gauge. The 8MP sensor features a 120-degree ultra-wide angle, which helps when taking photos of vast landscapes. The Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 sports a 6.59-inch display with a FHD+ resolution of 2340x1080p. The device is powered by a HiSilicon Kirin 710F SoC and a 4000mAh battery should ensure that you manage to go through an entire day without the need to hunt for a charging port.

Redmi K20

The Redmi K20 offers a 20MP pop-up front camera, but it features a neat little party trick. The pop-up module itself features LED lights. The idea being that when it's time to take a selfie and the front camera pops up, the LED lights would ensure that everyone would be looking straight at the camera. The pop-up module also comes with mechanisms to protect it from drops and accidental presses, while a sapphire glass cover adds to the durability. At the back of the device is a triple-rear camera setup with a 48MP Sony IMX582 sensor, an 8MP sensor with a telephoto lens, and a 13MP ultra-wide lens with a 124.8-degree field of view. The device features a 6.39-inch AMOLED FHD+ display and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 SoC. Other features of the device include a 4000mAh battery with support for Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0.
