ARM unveils new SoC components for 2016
ARM has announced a new Cortex-A72 processor, Mali-T880GPU and the CoreLink CCI-500 interconnect, all in the pipeline for 2016.
ARM has announced its upcoming SoC components for high-end smartphones of 2016. The British semiconductor and software design company unveiled its new Cortex-A72 processor, Mali-T880GPU and the CoreLink CCI-500 interconnect.
Cortex A-72 processor
The new 64-bit Cortex-A72 processor is 3.5 times faster than its 2014 processor, the Cortex-A15. It also requires 75% less power than the Cortex-A15. The new processor is a successor to the Cortex-A57 which is currently being used by almost all SoC manufacturers. The new Cortex A-72 processor can be used in combination with the Cortex-A57 processor to form the big.LITTLE architecture.
CoreLink CCI-500 interconnect
CoreLink CCI-500 cache coherent interconnect is the technology that enables the SoC to deliver better performance and improved power savings. ARM has achieved this by integrating a snoop filter. With the new CoreLink CCI-500 interconnect the SoC is able to double the peak memory of system bandwidth and delivers a 30 percent increase in processor memory performance compared to the previous generation CoreLink CCI-400.
Mali-T880 GPU
The new Mali-T880 GPU will deliver 1.8 times the graphic performance of the current gen Mali-T760 GPU. It also brings almost 40% decrease in power consumption over its previous gen GPU. ARM claims a more console like gaming experience with the new Mali-T880 GPU. ARM has added extra support for 4K content which will become the norm in the future.
These new components will show up in almost all flagship smartphones you buy next year as almost every SoC manufacturer uses an ARM designed processor. Manufacturers like HiSilicon, MediaTek and Rockchip have already announced partnerships for the Cortex A-72 processors.
