The extent of manufacturing at the facility will reportedly depend on the concessions that the central government is willing to offer Apple

Apple has already announced that it will be manufacturing iPhones in India out of a facility in Bengaluru soon. However, it seems like that facility may just be a part of a ‘pilot project’ initially. Sources have told Financial Express that the extent of manufacturing at the facility depends on the concessions that the central government is willing to offer Apple. The company had reportedly met with government officials last month to discuss its plans to start assembling in India. However, it was said that the company was seeking heavy concessions for the same.

Previous reports suggest that Apple will be partnering with Taiwanese OEM, Winstrom to manufacture devices from June this year. The facility will be located in Peenya, located in the outskirts of Bengaluru. This will be Apple's third global iPhone assembly unit. A release signed by the IT Minister for Karnataka, Priyank Kharge said that Apple will “will foster cutting edge technology ecosystem and supply chain development in the state, which are critical for India to compete globally.” He also went on to tweet about Apple’s plans, but the tweet was later deleted.

Further, while Apple will start manufacturing iPhones in India, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the device will get any cheaper. It should be noted that while a majority of the iPhones are assembled in China, the device doesn’t cost any cheaper over there.
