Apple’s iPhone maker, Foxconn, may set up shop in India again

HIGHLIGHTS

Foxconn is the company that manufactures smartphones for Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi and many others.

The world’s largest maker of electronics goods, Foxconn, is reportedly planning to set up a manufacturing plant in India. The company is behind the production of popular smartphones like Apple’s iPhones, Samsung’s Galaxy brand of devices and Xiaomi’s popular Mi smartphones. The company is sending a delegation to India in a month, to scout for locations, Subhash Desai, Industries Minister of Maharastha, told Reuters. Desai though also said that the company hasn’t made any firm commitments yet.

Furthermore, the company reportedly aims to set up 10-12 facilities in the country by 2020. These include both data centres and factories. It will be manufacturing iPads, iPods and iPhones in these facilities. This could in turn bring down the cost of Apple’s iPhones in India. The American company’s smartphones have been among the most expensive devices to be sold in the country for a long time now.

If the plan comes to fruition, it won’t be the first time that Foxconn has done its business in India. The company was earlier forced to stop its business in the country, following Nokia’s closure. Of course, it would also be a big win for the current government, which has been promoting its ‘Make in India’ initiative, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

India’s manufacturing industry has till now trailed China in a big way, with most companies simply assembling their devices here. Even homegrown smartphone makers like Micromax, Karbonn and others look to Chinese manufacturers for their devices, bringing them back for assembling within the country’s borders.

Of course, Foxconn’s move would make sense to some extent, since India is currently the third largest smartphone market in the world. In fact, many of the top companies in the world have marked India as the obvious next big market for the industry. Making devices here would reduce the prices, but companies will have to initially incur the cost of setting up facilities.
