Although the iPhone 16 will bring new AI capabilities, don't expect major design overhauls.

Apple’s “Glowtime” event today might be one of the most important launch events, not just for the Cupertino-based tech giant but also for the smartphone industry in general, as it may shape the next decade of smartphones that are likely to rely heavily on Generative AI. Later today, Apple is set to unveil the iPhone line-up, which will include the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. While other products like new Apple Watches and possibly a new version of AirPods are anticipated, the spotlight will be on the iPhone 16 series.

Apple is facing a unique challenge this year. With significant advancements from Google and Samsung, particularly in GenAI space, and the ongoing generative AI boom, Apple needs to demonstrate that the iPhone 16 is a meaningful upgrade over its predecessor and that it is a key player in the AI space.

A Shift in Focus: Software Over Hardware?

This year’s iPhone launch could be more focused on software innovations than hardware updates. Apple Intelligence, a new AI-driven platform, is expected to be a central theme, marking a shift in how the company approaches its devices. These AI enhancements, hinted at during the WWDC earlier this year, are expected to breathe new life into the iPhone series, especially as iPhone sales have experienced a slowdown recently.

With Apple Intelligence not coming to the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus models, this could become a crucial selling point for the iPhone 16 lineup. Expect Apple executives to place heavy emphasis on the potential of AI during the event.

What to Expect from the iPhone 16 Series

Although the iPhone 16 will bring new AI capabilities, don’t expect major design overhauls. The iPhone 16 (6.1-inch) and iPhone 16 Plus (6.7-inch) are likely to retain the same dimensions, design, and display technology as last year’s models, potentially sticking with a 60Hz OLED panel. The only notable hardware change for these two devices may be the introduction of the Action Button, a feature previously seen on the iPhone 15 Pro models.

On the other hand, the iPhone 16 Pro (6.3-inch) and iPhone 16 Pro Max (6.9-inch) are rumored to feature larger screens than their predecessors. Whether that’s an improvement is up for debate, as some may feel the current iPhone 15 Pro’s size is ideal. Other than the larger display, both models are expected to maintain a similar design and camera setup to last year’s models.

All four devices in the iPhone 16 lineup are set to be powered by the latest A18 Bionic chip, delivering better performance, improved battery life, and the ability to run Apple Intelligence and enhanced Siri functionalities smoothly. Expect better battery life and new color options for all models as well.

While the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are expected to keep last year’s pricing in India, the iPhone 16 Pro models could see a price increase, making them more expensive.

Two New AirPods Models

Apple is expected to introduce two new AirPods models at the event, replacing the current second- and third-generation versions. These new AirPods will likely feature USB-C charging ports, Find My support, and noise-cancellation technology in at least one of the models.

New Apple Watches: Series 10 and Ultra 3

Apple is also expected to introduce updates to its smartwatch lineup, including the Apple Watch Series 10 and the Apple Watch Ultra 3. Both devices are expected to come with new chipsets, improved performance, and better battery life.

The Apple Watch Series 10 is rumored to feature a larger display with thinner bezels, possibly coming in a larger 49mm size. While not many new health features are expected, one notable addition could be sleep apnea detection, expanding on the current sleep-tracking features.

Additionally, Apple may unveil new ways for the Apple Watch to integrate with iPhones and AirPods for a more seamless user experience.

What Not to Expect

Despite rumors, it’s unlikely that Apple will launch a new iPad mini during the Glowtime event. Apple is likely saving that for a dedicated iPad event, where updates to the iPad mini and other models are expected.

Additionally, don’t expect to see a new iPhone SE or AirTag at this event. Reports suggest that a new iPhone SE with an OLED display is in the works, but it’s unlikely to be unveiled until next year. The same goes for a new version of the AirTag.
