Apple is reportedly taking a bold new step with its next-generation iPhone production. The tech giant will kick off early manufacturing of the iPhone 17 in India, marking a shift from its usual reliance on China for this critical phase.
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently confirmed this development, revealing that Apple’s initial production stage – known as “New Production Introduction” (NPI) – for the iPhone 17 will be handled in India. Traditionally, China has managed this part of Apple’s production process, making this move a notable shift in Apple’s manufacturing strategy.

But what exactly is “New Production Introduction”? This stage is where Apple transitions its latest iPhone prototype into a refined blueprint for large-scale production. It’s a crucial process, as Apple tweaks its manufacturing methods, materials, and designs to ensure quality and efficiency. This time, however, only the standard iPhone 17 model will likely be made in India, while high-end models like the iPhone 17 Pro, Pro Max, and the rumored iPhone 17 Slim are expected to go through NPI in China.
This transition is part of Apple’s ongoing plan to diversify its manufacturing footprint beyond China. For years, China has served as Apple’s main production hub due to its robust supply chain, but Apple has been looking to reduce its reliance on a single country.

By shifting more production to India, Apple might aim to create a more adaptable and resilient supply chain that can handle global changes more smoothly. In fact, Apple reportedly plans to eventually manufacture around 25 percent of its iPhones in India. This includes the iPhone 16 Pro models, marking the first time Apple has assembled its Pro series outside of China.
India has already proven to be a successful manufacturing base for Apple. Bloomberg reported that Apple exported about $6 billion worth of iPhones made in India over the past six months, a promising sign that its investments in the country are paying off.
The iPhone 16 is still fresh in the market, yet this report on Apple’s early NPI efforts for the iPhone 17 demonstrate how much preparation goes into launching a new device worldwide.
