It seems that Apple is switching base from China and eyeing India for its manufacturing operations. Earlier we saw how the California-based tech giant set up manufacturing units in the country and promoted “Made in India” iPhones. Now, according to reports, the tech giant is in talks with Murugappa Group and Titan to procure sub-component assembly for camera modules used in iPhones. Read along to know what this could mean for all the parties involved.
According to an Economic Times report, Apple is currently in talks with India’s Murugappa Group and Titan. Both of these companies are under consideration to supply crucial camera modules to the iPhone maker. If this deal goes through, it might mean a big switch from China to India for Apple. Well, this is not new, the company has been weighing on India more.

Currently, Apple does not procure the necessary camera module component for its iPhones from India. If it partners with either of these companies, then this will change. However, there is still a lot of time before this can happen. According to Economic Times, it can take another five-six months before the deal gets finalised.
If we talk about the two companies in question, the Murugappa Group has leverage over Titan and can be the first choice. It has a huge portfolio which ranges from auto parts and abrasives to Moshine Electronics’ which is known for expertise in camera module manufacturing. On the other hand is Tata Group’s Titan. Tata Group is already in partnership with Apple for other Indian operations. Titan, specifically, manufactures watches and jewelry.
All this is part of Apple’s overall plan to localise production and make a stronger supply chain in India. It also aims to address the critical operational challenges by localising the production of camera modules.
