The third quarter (Q3) of the financial year 2023 just concluded in September and the analysis of data about the smartphone shipments in India reveals some key points. Data picked up from Counterpoint’s Monthly India Smartphone Tracker revealed that the smartphone shipments in India remained stagnant even in Q3.
But it was Apple that saw a huge upward graph in their Indian shipments, I believe that this had to do with the launch of the iPhone 15 series. Apple saw its highest-ever smartphone shipment in this quarter. Let’s take a look at some of Apple’s numbers and the market trends in their entirety during the Q3.

Apple iPhone’s Q3 share growth
This was a good quarter for the California-based based company. Speaking of the numbers, Apple witnessed an outstanding 34% year-on-year growth. Along with that, it shipped 2.5 million units in this quarter. The trend of premiumisation is kicking in in India and Apple is benefiting from it by offering deals and financing options.
Let’s now talk about some Android smartphone brands too. Apple’s biggest competitor, Samsung leads the market with a 17.6% market share. This is mostly because of its A and M series smartphones. Samsung focuses on offline sales too, along with innovative tech, and also offers premium stuff.

This is followed by none other than Redmi. Redmi is quite common in Indian households and follows Samsung closely with a 16.6% market share. The Redmi 12 series and strong offline presence helped with that. Meanwhile, Vivo, Transsion brands, and OnePlus closely come after these two in the market share list.
Finally, let me take you through some market insights for this quarter. The ₹10,000-₹15,000 smartphone segment saw a big growth. On top of that, 53% of the smartphone shipments in India were 5G while 4G feature phones accounted for 32% of the overall feature phone shipments this quarter. Because of financing options, the premium segment also saw a boom. Interestingly, foldable smartphones are also gaining popularity in the premium segment.
