Apple iPhone 8 might sport LG-made 3D camera: Report
Will this be iPhone 8's revolutionary feature?
Apple has reportedly united with LG Innotek for the camera module of its next iPhone. The next iPhone might feature dual rear camera from LG with support for 3D photography.
"Apple is now studying how to apply its 3D camera technology into LG Innotek’s smartphone camera," a source close to the situation told The Korea Economic Daily. "Since LG Innotek also has its own 3D camera and related technologies, such joint efforts will likely to bear fruit sometime within next year," the source added.
Apple introduced iPhone 7 Plus this year with dual rear cameras with one of the image sensor being used as a telephoto lens. With LG Innotek collaboration, Apple could revolutionise the camera on next iPhone by adding more depth to photos.
Apple acquired LinX, an Israeli startup specialising in 3D camera technology in April 2015. Apple acquired LinX for $2o million and absorbed latter's 3D camera technology. Linx has the technology for adding more depth to photos by dividing the digital image in the stages.
In order to support 3D photographing, Apple needs dual camera setup with additional depth sensing. According to The Korea Economic Daily, LG Innotek is exclusively supplying the dual camera setup for iPhone 7 in Korea. LG Innotek has its own 3D camera technology, which was used in Optimus 3D.
Apple iPhone 8 is reported to come in three variants next year – one of the premium variants featuring all glass design and OLED display. According to KGI's Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple's next iPhone will continue to use dual rear camera setup but it could add an additional feature of 3D photographing.
