HIGHLIGHTS

According to a report, the iPhone 6s and the 6s Plus were unable to match the sales figures their predecessors were able to achieve.

At the end of the first weekend after the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus launch, numbers have started to pour in and they are not looking good. The iPhone 6s and 6s Plus which saw their India launch last week have not been able to capture the attention of buyers as much as Apple expected. The phone reportedly sold lesser number of units when compared to its predecessors iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.

According to a report by Business Standard, the new iPhone duo sold about 50,000 units. The report states “Cumulative sales over the first weekend are estimated to be in the region of 50,000 across all retail formats.” if the reports are to be believed, the numbers are lower than what the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus achieved at their India launch. Last year, Apple sent about 55,000 combined units which went out of stock in just 72 hours. Anticipating a similar response, this time the company had sent almost 1,65,000 units. This means the iPhone 6s and the 6s Plus achieved just 30 percent of the expected sales.

Apple, this year partnered with almost all e-commerce websites and some other commercial websites as well such as Paytm, Gadgets 360 etc for the launch. Many retail chains such as Mobile Store, Croma, etc were part of the big launch but were unable to cash in on it due to the lower sales numbers. The Digit team also covered the midnight launch of the new iPhones in Delhi and while talking to one of the shop owners found out that only 60 units of the iPhone 6 were up for sale with them. Also, on launch day, the iPhones were being sold to customers who pre-booked the device, be it online or offline.

According to the report, the new iPhone 6s might see a price cut in the coming few weeks bringing the base model of phone below the 60K price mark. With the price cut it might be able to cash in on the festive season. Currently, the iPhone 6s and the 6s Plus not only cost more than what the corresponding yester-year’s model used to but it is costlier in India than any other nation. The iPhone 6s which is available in 16GB, 64GB and 128GB storage options is priced at Rs 62,000, Rs 72,000 and Rs 82,000, respectively. And, the 6s Plus which comes in 16GB, 64GB and 128GB models is priced at 72,000, Rs 82,000 and Rs 92,000, respectively.

In a related news, the Indian models of the iPhone 6s and the 6s Plus are being shipped with a 10W wall charger which is double the capacity of what Apple sold in India before. This means users will able to charge their respective iPhones much faster now due to the increased capacity.
