Apple iPhone 17 Pro is expected to include some upgrades over the iPhone 16 Pro. The device is expected to have significant design changes and specification upgrades. The latest rumours suggest that the iPhone 17 Pro will support 8K video recording. If true, it will be a significant improvement over the current 4K video recording.
According to MacRumors, Apple previously tested 8K recording on the iPhone 16 Pro, but hardware limitations, particularly with the 12MP telephoto lens, limited its inclusion. For the uninitiated, the iPhone 17 Pro is expected to include triple 48MP cameras, removing this limitation and allowing 8K video recording on all rear lenses for the first time.
Devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra and Google Pixel 9 Pro support 8K video recording. While 8K video is not yet mainstream, it does provide benefits such as the ability to crop footage while maintaining 4K resolution.
Recently, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman hinted that Apple could improve video recording in the iPhone 17 Pro series, positioning it as the go-to device for vloggers and filmmakers.

Having said that, Apple is expected to release a redesigned camera layout with a horizontal camera bar, similar to the Pixel lineup, for the iPhone 17 Pro series. The new camera module is said to have a triple-lens setup on the left, while the flash, microphone, and LiDAR sensor will be on the right.
While the reason for the design changes is unknown, the leaks suggest Apple is looking for more space to accommodate improved sensors, vapour cooling chambers, and additional AI-powered camera features.
On the front, all iPhone 17 devices are said to have a 24MP front-facing camera, which is another upgrade from the 12MP selfie shooters on the iPhone 16 series.
