Apple iOS 4.3.3 update released to remove location tracking, as promised

Apple yesterday released the update it promised last week, fixing the location tracking “bug” that had privacy advocates up in arms ever since it was discovered. Specifically, the fix, part of iOS 4.3.3, will now ensure that the iPhone will not store location information once location services are turned off.

Even when location services are turned on, devices with Apple iOS 4.3.3 installed will have a reduced cache size (of the consolidated.db file) for location data, and, will longer synchronise the information with iTunes via the desktop. Other fixes included in the update are improved battery life, as well as some fixes for the iPod. The update has reportedly already begun rolling out – connect your iOS device to iTunes to find out if it is available.
