Apple has 1,000 engineers working on augmented reality tech for iPhone: Report
Apple recently acquired PrimeSense, Metaio and RealFace to strengthen its augmented reality development efforts. Nothing, though, has been revealed till now.
Apple reportedly has over 1,000 engineers working on a new augmented reality project. The AR technology from Apple is expected to debut on the next iPhone, slated to release some time in September. The new information comes from a UBS research note obtained by Business Insider.
Apple CEO Tim Cook has commented about the company's efforts to explore augmented reality. Cook recently commented that AR can be as big as original iPhone itself. Apple's recent acquisitions of PrimeSense, Metaio and RealFace further strengthens the fact that company is serious about augmented reality as a big technology prospect.
"According to some industry sources, the company may have over 1,000 engineers working on a project in Israel that could be related to AR," the UBS research note says.
Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality are seen as the next big wave of technology. VR replaces the real world with a simulated one, while AR superimposes an image on the real world for predictive vision. Apple's CEO Tim Cook believes that AR is bigger than VR, and will take some time to become mainstream. The UBS research falls in line with previous rumours from KGI Securities' Ming-Chi Kuo, who had said that Apple could fit its next iPhone with an IR module next to the front-facing camera for 3D sensing and augmented reality applications.
Apple's AR/VR efforts have been a guarded secret for a long time now, and it will be some time before we know more about the company's progress in AR developments.
