What will be the first foldable product with the Apple logo, is yet to be known.

This hinge uses a friction clutch with interlocked 'fingers' and crescent-shaped slots to control rotation.

Samsung, Google, and all the other leading smartphone brands have stepped into the foldable race. Apple has been silent on the same, but we all know it believes in slow and steady. Just like with AI, or Apple Intelligence. But there has been some progress in that regard. The California-based tech giant has been granted a patent for a cutting-edge hinge mechanism. This hints at the fact that Apple might bring out a foldable device soon.

The patent has been published on the US Patent and Trademark Office (USTPO) website. From the listing, we can see a sophisticated hinge design that could be used across various devices, including smartphones, tablets, and laptops. What will be the first foldable product with the Apple logo, is yet to be known.

The hinge mechanism described in the patent features multiple interlocking links that rotate relative to each other. This enables the device to fold and unfold seamlessly. It also uses a friction clutch with interlocked ‘fingers’ and crescent-shaped slots to control rotation. This can be used to prevent overextension. Additionally, rotational synchronisation gears are also shown in the patent that can allow precise control during the folding process.

In addition to this, there’s a unique ‘counterbalance mechanism’ which comprises a spring, pad, and roller. This can help manage the torque during folding and unfolding. The hinge also includes curved surfaces to help with wear and tear.

Further, the patent reveals that Apple’s future foldable devices can also include a concealed camera when the device is folded. There can also be a two-dimensional array of haptic devices for enhanced feedback. And lastly, we can get to see audio playback through speakers embedded at the corners of the flexible display.

We can still expect Apple to take some years to launch a foldable device as they have just filed a patent.
