Apple could launch the iPhone SE 2 at WWDC 2018
Based on a report, it is expected that the successor to the iPhone SE could be announced at WWDC 2018 by Apple with upgraded hardware.
Apple could launch the successor to the iPhone SE (review) at WWDC this year. According to a report on a Chinese website, Apple is set to launch an upgraded iPhone SE later this year. Chinese website QQ states the upcoming iPhone SE 2 could be powered by the Apple 10 chipset coupled with 2GB RAM and could be available in 32GB and 128GB storage variants.
The website also claims that the phone could retain TouchID, which makes sense if Apple wants to keep the phone priced below $500. What seems unlikely however is the website’s claim that the iPhone SE 2 will have a 4.2-inch display instead of a 4-inch one. If indeed Apple has to fit a newer screen, it has to overhaul the current manufacturing process and design a new one.
In fact, noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had said the refreshed iPhone SE will retain the size and dimensions of its predecessor. According to the analyst, the iPhone SE won’t even have wireless charging and FaceID. The iPhone SE will continue to be Apple’s option for those looking for an iPhone experience under a tight budget.
The iPhone SE was launched back in March 2016 and in India, the handset has been especially popular. Despite being more than two years old now, the iPhone SE continues to sell well in the country and Apple has even started to manufacture the device locally in Bangalore to keep the cost low.
The iPhone SE successor was being rumoured for months now. It is expected to come with more powerful hardware to allow iOS 12 to run smoothly. But don’t expect modern-day hardware like 3D sensors and wireless charging.
WWDC, Apple’s annual developer conference is expected to happen from June 4 to June 8 at San Jose Convention Center in California. While we don’t have a confirmation whether the iPhone SE 2 will indeed launch, Apple will showcase the updates to iOS, watchOS, macOS and tvOS.
