Android tops 700,000 daily activations

Andy Rubin, Google‘s senior vice president for mobile services, has said that the Android operating system has continued to achieve phenomenal growth rate and is activated on more than 700,000 devices sign up for the operating system every day. Reveling Android’s global success, Rubin said on Google and Twitter, “There are now over 700,000 Android devices activated every day”. Rubin also clarified in his follow-up post on Google that the 700,000 activations per day only included new devices not resold ones. “We count each device only once. Activations means you go into a store, buy a device, [and] put it on the network by subscribing to a wireless service,” he clarifies.

Earlier this month, Google’s executive chairman, Eric Schmidt, said at an event that more than 550,000 Android phones were being activated every day. It’s notable that while Schmidt specifically mentioned phones, Rubin talked about “devices”, which means he might be including the phones and tablets as well. It may also be recalled that Rubin in June had said that there were 500,000 Android activations per day.

The new growth figures certainly show significant escalation in popularity of the Android operating system worldwide. Apple, however, remains Android’s latest closest rival and is reportedly maintaining a sizable lead on Android in the tablet segment. With manufacturers including LG, Sony, and Samsung rushing to put most of their best devices to the latest ICS OS, the figures are certainly going to increase.
