Android-powered BlackBerry Passport spotted online, updated
HIGHLIGHTS

Blackberry Passport Silver Edition running Android could be available in 2016, depending heavily on the success of the BlackBerry Venice.

Update: A video is now available showcasing the BlackBerry Passport running on Android and around the 4 minute and 59 second mark, you can see the smartphone in action. Codenamed Oslo, the device is running on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 SoC coupled with 3GB of RAM. The rear houses a 13MP camera and the square display has a 1440×1440 pixel resolution as well as a 3,450mAh battery that powers the entire package. There is no word on the pricing or release date of the smartphone as yet.

If information circulating the Internet can be believed, then Judgement Day may be upon us. Images of a BlackBerry Passport Silver Edition running Google’s Android 5.1 operating system have emerged online. The smartphone is expected to launch in 2016 running Google’s OS and will be conveniently called the BlackBerry Passport 2.

There is, however, a catch. BlackBerry is expected to release the Android-powered smartphone in the market only if the BlackBerry Venice is well received. For the uninitiated, the smartphone codenamed Venice has a sliding keyboard, runs on Android, and is expected to launch towards the end of 2015. As for the specs, rumors suggest that the Venice will have a 5.4-inch QHD LCD with curved glass, Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 SoC, 3GB RAM, and 18MP/5MP cameras. However all of these are just rumors, so it's better to take everything with a pinch of salt at this point of time.

Recently we saw the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Note 5, Samsung’s latest flagship phablet sporting a cover that houses a QWERTY keypad. In terms of specifications, the device comes with the Exynos 7 Octa processor coupled with 4GB of RAM. There is also a 16MP rear camera, along with a 5MP selfie camera. The Galaxy Note 5 has a 5.7-inch QHD SAMOLED display.

Are we looking at the return of the QWERTY keypad on smartphones? Only time will tell. For what it offered, the BlackBerry Passport was a great smartphone even if it catered to a niche audience. Running on Android, the Passport could expand BlackBerry's horizons.
