Android L will let you shoot RAW images with your smartphones
The new camera API allows Android devices to shoot images in DNG format, which is the raw format seen on professional cameras.
After using the Camera v1 API, Google has finally adopted a new API for the camera in its Android L operating system. According to a PhoneArena report, the new API will speed up the camera drastically, while also giving more room for the use of third party apps. In addition, perhaps taking a leaf out of Nokia’s recent playbook, the Android camera will now allow users to set exposure settings, while also taking images in .DNG format, which is a raw format seen on professional cameras.
The new camera API also allows third party developers to access the colour correction matrix for the camera. This is a feature that was available only to the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) till now. This is accompanied by the fact that each new image will be accompanied by the settings for images. This again is a feature that was missing from the old API, which treated the manual controls as a seperate general layer outside images.
The new API provides a lot of room for developers and device manufacturers to bring state-of-the-art cameras on smartphones. Third party manufacturers should also be able to bring a lot of creative additions through their apps.
