Intensifying the entry-level 4G smartphone space, Airtel has launched a new 4G smartphone in collaboration with Celkon for an effective price of Rs 1249. Named Celkon Star 4G+, the phone features a 4-inch display, dual cameras, dual SIM slots, and FM radio. The phone originally retails for Rs 2,999.
The phone is part of Bharti Airtel’s “Mera Pehla Smartphone” initiative and is the second device from Celkon under the partnership. The phone comes preloaded with My Airtel, Wynk Music and Airtel TV along with the usual support of Android apps on the Google Play Store.
The most interesting fact about the phone is its price. Airtel claims the price is effectively Rs 1,249, making this the cheapest 4G Android smartphone ever made.
However, the fine print states that a customer has to make a down payment of Rs 2,749 and make continuous monthly recharges of Rs 169 for 36 months. The customer will then get a cashback of Rs 500 after 18 months and Rs 1000 after 36 months, taking the total cash benefit to Rs 1,500.
The customer also has the flexibility of doing recharges of any denomination and validity. However, to claim the cash refund benefit of Rs 500, recharges worth Rs 3,000 needs to be done in the first 18 months and another Rs 3,000 in the next 18 months to get the cash benefit of Rs 1,500.
The phone is offered in four colours — Gold, Champagne, Dark Blue and Black.
