Numerous tech companies are in Barcelona, Spain, for the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 event. They all are showing off new gadgets and technologies, capturing everyone’s attention from around the world. At MWC 2024, Motorola showed off a bendable smartphone. Well, not just Motorola, Samsung has also revealed a bendable concept phone named ‘Cling Band.’

Samsung Cling Band boasts a flexible OLED screen, enabling it to transform seamlessly between smartphone and smartwatch functionalities.

In its candy bar mode, the Cling Band resembles any other smartphone, sporting a thin form factor, a bezel-less front screen and a rear camera.

Additionally, it includes standard features such as a USB Type-C port and a loudspeaker on the bottom.

A cleverly designed groove-like structure provides stability to the flexible screen when the device is bent.

When bent, the phone looks like a dome under the bridge. Alongside the camera, it incorporates a heart rate monitor on the rear, allowing for health metric tracking when worn on the wrist.

It’s important to note that it is just a concept at this stage and is meant to showcase the flexibility of OLED screens from Samsung Display.

One potential drawback of this design is its limitation in health data collection. When used as a phone, the device would be unable to measure vital health metrics, leading to incomplete health data records. Additionally, wearing the device during sleep could cause discomfort.

In my opinion, bendable phones like the ones showcased by Motorola and Samsung at MWC 2024 seem cool and futuristic, but whether they’ll become the norm remains uncertain. While they offer unique flexibility and versatility, there are still some limitations and challenges to overcome.

It’s possible that in the future, bendable phones could become more popular as technology advances and improves, but for now, they’re still just innovative concepts. So, it’s unclear if they’ll completely replace traditional smartphones.
