Acer Liquid – Rs 25,000 Android-based phone hands-on impressions and video

Acer today, have launched the ‘Liquid’, their latest touchscreen smartphone powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon (the Qualcomm 8250 running at 768mhz) processor and based on the Android Donut (v1.6) operating system. Launched in Mumbai, the Acer Liquid is targetted at business as well as casual users, this phone comes with a 3.5-inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen.

The build quality of the phone is quite good and features smooth curves. It comes in a choice of three colours – black, white and metallic red. There are three unique LED indicators for status notifications; these sit beside the audio jack, and on the top bezel of the phone. The LED can notify new messages, missed calls and battery life. The Acer Liquid has a 5 MP autofocus camera without flash. The phone can play HD videos at 1080p resolution. The volume control buttons are present on the right hand side edge along with the camera shutter. It does not have any protruding buttons on the body and the four buttons at the bottom of the screen are touch sensitive.

Acer has bundled two in-build apps – one called Spinlets is an audio streaming app and the other called UrFooz is an avatar creation app; the latter’s outputs can be sent to social networking sites as used as profile pics. We don’t see how Spinlets is very different from say Last.fm or grooveshark; similarly seesmic desktop or Ping.fm can easily do what urfooz can.

The phone as three home screens with the main homescreen allowing customization of widgets. The other two screens show sliders for media and internet access. Liquid has integrated multimedia for photos, music and videos on the multimedia screen. Business users will be happy with the bundled Microsoft Outlook application and Exchange server support. The phone is quite competitively priced at Rs. 24,900 (with 2GB micro SD).
