7 more railway stations in Mumbai to get free Wi-Fi services
The service was inaugurated by the MInister for Railways, Suresh Prabhu
Commuters using Mumbai’s suburban rail network will be able to access free Wi-Fi at seven stations. The service will be available at Churchgate, Dadar, Bandra, Bandra Terminus, Khar, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, and Kalyan. The service was inaugurated by the Minister for Railways, Suresh Prabhu. According to a report by the Hindustan Times, users will have to register their mobile numbers to access the service after which they will receive an OTP. This has to be entered into the login page after which they will be able user the service. However, the report notes that users will receive the highest possible speeds for the first 30 minutes, after which the speed will decrease.
This comes after Google and Railtel partnered to launch free Wi-Fi services at the Mumbai Central railway station earlier this year. The plan is to make the service available in 100 other stations by the end of the year. Other stations where Google’s free Wi-Fi service is available include Bhubaneshwar, Ujjain, Jaipur, Guwahati and more.
Facebook is also reportedly planning to introduce Wi-Fi services in India. Called Express Wi-Fi, the service will not be free, but will be quite affordable instead. It also says that it will partner with “multiple ISP partners” to offer internet services in rural areas via public Wi-Fi Hotspots. However, currently it isn’t clear exactly how Facebook plans to offer the service.
