PC market sees 3% growth in 2024 as device upgrades outpace AI demand: Details here
The PC market saw consecutive growth both in Q1 and Q2 of 2024.
A total of 64.9 million units have been sold in both the quarters.
A recent study by the IDC suggests that built-in AI capabilities are not the main driver of this growth.
During the Covid phase, a lot of markets took the plunge owing to the low demand. This also includes the global PC market. But after a few years, it is finally moving towards recovery. The PC market saw consecutive growth both in Q1 and Q2 of 2024. Even the worldwide shipments have increased by 3% in both of the quarters. A total of 64.9 million units have been sold in both the quarters. According to analysts, this growth can be credited to a lot of factors including a rising demand for AI-powered PCs and the upcoming end of support for Windows 10 in October 2025. But the story doesn’t end here, a recent study issued by the International Data Corporation (IDC) suggests that built-in AI capabilities are not the main driver of this growth.
The IDC report suggests that the increase in PC shipments is because of the need for consumers and businesses to replace their old devices and upgrade their existing laptops, instead of buying a new PC just for AI. The AI features are just an add-on.
“While AI has been a buzzword of late, it has yet to be a purchase driver among PC buyers,” said Jitesh Ubrani, research manager for Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers at IDC. “Businesses recognize the importance of AI, though many struggle to see the immediate use case. Instead, they are opting for AI PCs as a means of future-proofing.”
He further added that currently not a lot of customers do not understand the advantages of AI-powered components like dedicated neural processing units (NPUs) in PCs. Now that companies are adding AI features to their devices, there’s a need to highlight its benefits too.
The debate behind whether AI is driving the growth will continue but overall this year looks positive for global PC shipments and more growth is expected.
