PC demand in India grows, IDC reports 14% growth YoY in Q3: HP still in lead

The market saw a 14% year-on-year (YoY) increase reaching 4.5 million units in the third quarter of the year.

The consumer segment’s growth was a good change compared to the slump in Q2 of 2023.

The sales of personal computers and laptops had seen a decline in the second quarter of 2023 owing to many reasons. But now as the data from the third quarter of the year, that is from July to September, is coming forward, we see a change in that trend. Let’s see how the sales have fared this time as compared to the previous quarter.

The traditional PC market in India includes desktops, notebooks, and workstations.  A recent report by IDC revealed promising statistics. The market saw a 14% year-on-year (YoY) increase reaching 4.5 million units in the third quarter of the year. This is promising when compared to the 15.3% year-on-year decline seen in the last quarter (Q2 2023). Speaking of the individual categories, the notebook category saw 13.1%, while the desktop category grew by 19.3%. Further, a 26.3 YoY growth was seen in the consumer segment, while the commercial segment stayed steady.

The consumer segment’s growth was a good change compared to the slump in Q2 of 2023. Remember the government had issued a notice regarding mandatory import licenses on PCs. This was supposed to start on October 30 but was put on hold. In lieu of this, vendors had arranged for inventory so that there was no shortage of supplies or price hikes with the festive season sales around the corner. 

Let’s now take a look at the companies that did better than the others in Q3 or 2023.

The market was led by HP which accounted for a 29.4% market share. It held a 34.3% share in the commercial segment and a 25.9% share in the consumer segment. Lenovo stood second with a 17% market share. It was followed by Dell Technologies having a 14.6% and ASUS with a 12.5% market share respectively.
