The patent outlines a MacBook with a base portion that houses an input component and a display portion that can be rotated and detached from the base. This display could feature an aperture and an internal volume. The display assembly may include backside camera and sensor modules, potentially featuring a LiDAR module among other sensors.

One figure in the patent, FIG. 2B, shows a MacBook with a backside camera. Various illustrations depict the camera either flush with or protruding from the back lid, similar to the rear cameras found on iPhones. Another figure, FIG. 5, suggests a multi-camera setup akin to the iPhone Pro.

FIG. 3C in the patent depicts a camera with various sensor options, such as an infrared camera, time-of-flight camera, LiDAR module, or facial and object recognition sensors.

Additionally, the patent includes designs for an attachable and removable camera, as seen in FIGS. 7 and 9A. FIG. 8A shows a MacBook display with a base portion that can be connected to the display through a hinge assembly, while FIG. 9B illustrates the camera module being attachable to the front display if needed.

Originally filed in April 2022, this patent represents Apple’s innovative approach to enhancing MacBook functionality with camera and display features.
