CES 2013: Dell refreshes Inspiron R laptops; adds optional touchscreen

Dell has refreshed its mainstream Inspiron R series laptop making the machines slimmer and adding an optional touchscreen along with Windows 8.

The new 14, 15 and 17-inch Inspiron and Inspiron R series laptops are thinner than the 2012 models. The 14R measures 0.98-inches in thinness and 2 kgs in weight. The Inspiron 14 is 1-inch thin and 2kgs in weight. It ranges all the way up to 1.4-inches thick and 2.7kgs for the 17R and 17. If you look at the touchscreen variants of these devices it will be a tad thicker.

Under the hood, the device is powered by an Intel Celeron 887 all the way up to an Intel Core i7-3517U. Graphics options for these devices include Intel’s integrated solution or discrete: up to Nvidia GeForce GT640M LE for the 14-inch, and up to an AMD Radeon HD 8730 for the 15 and 17-inch lines.

The Inspiron and Inspiron R series have DVD drives, and hard drives capacity starts at 320GB all the way up to 1TB. The laptops come in two variants – touch screen and non-touch screen.

In terms of pricing, the Inspiron 14R will start from $430 (Rs. 24,000 approx.), and the Inspiron 15R and 17R are expected to start from $500 (Rs. 27,500 approx.) depending on the configuration. The touchscreen variant will cost $150 more.

In 2012, we saw the  Dell Inspiron 14R Special Edition featuring an Intel Core-i7 – 3612QM processor @ 2.1GHz, 6GB of RAM along with Intel HD 4000 and Nvidia GeForce GT640M graphics.
