At its annual Snapdragon Technology Summit, Qualcomm announced Snapdragon powered Windows PCs bringing in all day battery life, gigabit LTE connectivity and Windows 10 S operating system.
Qualcomm kicked off its second annual Snapdragon Technology Summit with the announcement of Snapdragon 835 powered Windows PCs. Called the Always Connected PC, this new breed of Windows devices will be on cellular LTE networks and sport day-long battery life.
As the Snapdragon platform turned a decade old, Windows became the latest frontier conquered by Qualcomm with the promise of setting off the next generation Windows devices. Microsoft's Terry Myerson was on stage to make the announcement.
The upcoming cellular PCs will have the Qualcomm X16 Gigabit modem for 5G connectivity and have more than 20 hours of battery life. They will be slim and sleek with Windows 10 S at the heart of it. Asus and HP announced the first Always Connected PCs while Lenovo will show its hand at CES 2018 in January.
Asus launched the Nova Go, a 2-in-1 Windows laptop with a 13.3-inch backlit-LED full HD display, powered by Snapdragon 835 with upto 256GB UFS 2.0 storage and 8GB RAM. It will support Gigabit LTE and last for 22 hours, with over 30 days of standby. It will be priced $799 (roughly Rs 51,000) for the 8GB+256GB variant and $599 (roughly Rs 38500) for the 4GB+64GB variant.
HP announced the Envy x2, a cellular Windows detachable with a 12.3-inch display that boasts the longest battery life in a Windows detachable PC. This too will be powered by the Snapdragon 835 with 4GB of RAM and run on Windows 10 S with 20 hour battery life.
Both devices will have Windows Hello, Windows Ink and Windows Cortana in it. They will support e-SIM and NanoSIMs. Microsoft also tailored Office 365 apps to run on the ARM-based processor and more will have to follow suit. The devices turn on instantly, can stay connected throughout and last the whole day. A 20 hour battery life was unheard of in a Windows device before.
Finally, AMD announced it has joined forces with Qualcomm to bring in AMD's Ryzen mobile platform using Snapdragon LTE modems for gigabit connection speeds. The next-gen Ryzen chipsets will have integrated Radeon Vega graphics and provide desktop grade performance. So far, AMD has announced two chipsets, both quad-core with eight threads.
Intel will face stiff competition next year with Qualcomm's announcement of cellular, always connected, mobile PCs.
