YouTube VR app now available for Daydream
The app comes just a day after the Daydream VR headset was made available in select countries
YouTube has launched the YouTube VR app which is specifically optimised for VR. However, the app is currently only available for Google’s Daydream platform. So, users will need to have a Pixel phone as well as the Daydream VR headset in order to use the app. While the Pixel was launched in India last month, headset was made available in US, UK, Canada, Germany and Australia yesterday. It is priced at $79 (approx. Rs. 5,300) in the US.
While YouTube has supported VR videos on its platform before, this is the first standalone app released by the company. In a post on its official blog, the company says that the new app is built from the ground up and is optimised for VR. “Every single video on the platform becomes an immersive VR experience, from 360-degree videos that let you step inside the content to standard videos shown on a virtual movie screen in the new theater mode,” the company states. The app also offers voice search, and lets users sign in so that they can watch videos from channels they have subscribed to.
