YouTube may be working on a live TV streaming service called Unplugged. According to a Bloomberg report, the service would offer users cable TV channels streamed over the internet and packages may start at less than $35. YouTube has overhauled its technical architecture and may be planning to debut the service 2017. In addition, the company’s executives may have already discussed its plans with media companies such as NBCUniversal, Viacom, Twenty-First Century Fox, and CBS, however they have yet to secure any rights.
The report says, YouTube has been working on an online cable package since 2012. However, plans to launch the service have sped up over the past few months, due to increased competition. Bloomberg noted that Apple and Amazon are working on similar proposals, while Dish Network and Sony have already introduced them. Back in December 2015, it was reported that YouTube was in talks with studios to license movies and TV shows.
YouTube already offers a subscription service called YouTube Red. The service offers users an ad-free experience, the ability to watch videos offline, and a selection of original shows and movies. However, it does not offer live TV channels. YouTube Red is currently only available to those in the US and is priced at $9.99 per month.
