YouTube is ready to go ‘beyond HD’, adds 4K video support
For the last eight months, we have seen the world’s most popular most video streaming website getting high on full HD videos. Now, taking a step further in a much more futuristic approach, YouTube has decided to add support for uploading and streaming videos with more than a 1920×1080 resolution and upto 4K i.e. 4096×3112 (4096×2304 for widescreen) resolution.
In case you are wondering how big the resolution is, let us explain – you usually watch 4K videos in the IMAX movie theaters, that utilize a 25-feet wide display to exhibit the huge resolution. So yes, it is pretty large and you will find few computer monitors out there which will play such videos in their sizes.
To watch such a video at its native resolution, you have to choose the “Original” option at the resolution selector. It’ll show any video that is more than 1080p in its full glory. You can peruse this playlist of 4K videos from YouTube itself, so that you wont need to search a needle in the haystack. But wait… don’t just click on it if you don’t have a that 50 mbps Airtel line with a few gigabytes of data to spare!
So after you run out of money paying for that Red One 4K camera, buying that workstation for editing the video, and paying the bills for that Airtel 50 mbps line at least YouTube will host it for you for free. At least now the Red One owners wont need to waste time converting their videos to upload, and the world can view it in magnificent detail, or at 480p if they like it better that way.
