YouTube hits one billion users a month, eight years since launch
The online video streaming service, YouTube, has announced that one billion users visit the service each month
If YouTube is your go to source for video content on the Internet you are not alone. On its official blog, YouTube has announced that a whopping one billion people visit the video streaming service each month. That’s roughly one in every seven people on the planet.
On Its official blog, YouTube says, “In the last eight years you’ve come to YouTube to watch, share and fall in love with videos from all over the world. Tens of thousands of partners have created channels that have found and built businesses for passionate, engaged audiences. Advertisers have taken notice: all of the Ad Age Top 100 brands are now running campaigns on YouTube. And today, we’re announcing a new milestone: YouTube now has more than a billion unique users every single month.”
The blog goes on to say, “What does a billion people tuning into YouTube look like? Nearly one out of every two people on the Internet visits YouTube. Our monthly viewership is the equivalent of roughly ten Super Bowl audiences. If YouTube were a country, we’d be the third largest in the world after China and India. PSY and Madonna would have to repeat their Madison Square Garden performance in front of a packed house 200,000 more times. That’s a lot of Gangnam Style!”
In October of 2011, YouTube had 800 million visitors per month, meaning it has taken the service approximately 17 months to reach the one billion mark. The social networking website, Facebook, crossed the one billion user mark five months ago.
Google owns YouTube. The video streaming service started in 2005 and was purchased by Google in 2006 when the service has a mere 50 million users worldwide. Today, YouTube is the go to video content place, be it for music videos, TV shows, cat videos and so much more video content. YouTube also has its own movie streaming service. Of course, things are helped because creating and uploading content on YouTube is as easy as creating a Gmail account.
