You might not receive bank OTP messages and more from September 1: Here’s why
HIGHLIGHTS

Users might not receive messages from banks, financial institutions, and more starting September 1.

This is an attempt of TRAI to reduce spam messages on our phones.

As per the new directive, the telecom operators will have to go through the the messages to block the spam messages.

Spam messages and calls are an issue that we Indians are dealing with. To solve this issue, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) issued a directive that asked all telecom operators to regulate messages containing URLs, OTT links, etc. This is an attempt to reduce spam messages on our phones. But this directive could even impact the regular and important messages that we receive.

Users might not receive messages from banks, financial institutions, and e-commerce platforms starting September 1. TRAI has asked telecom operators to stop transmitting messages that include URLs, OTT links, APKs, or call-back numbers from operators that are not registered with them.

Now this can even impact messages coming from banks, and other institutions that have not registered their templates with the telecom operators by August 31. If they don’t do so, and the messages that they send contain the above-mentioned things, then the messages will not get sent and will get blocked.

So what happens is that right now companies register their headers with the telecom operators. But this does not include the content of the messages. So operators don’t check the content of the message that they are transmitting to the users.

But now, as per the new directive, the telecom operators will have to go through the content of the messages to flag and block the spam messages. They will probably create a new system and block the messages that don’t match the record.

The biggest telecom operators of the country: Jio, Airtel, and Vi are not happy with the move and want an extension of the deadline. Let’s see if the deadline is extended or not but if you don’t receive your OTPs or other messages from September 1, you know the reason.
