Losing a fortune can be someone’s worst nightmare come true, and losing somewhere around Rs 5,900 crore is just unimaginable. A Welsh IT engineer James Howells is currently living this nightmare. Howells first made headlines in 2009 when he lost a hard drive containing 8,000 Bitcoins. It is now valued at Rs 5,900 crore. There’s been a new development in the case, but not a positive one.
Halfina Eddy-Evans, Howells’ former partner has now revealed that she unknowingly threw away the hard drive nearly a decade ago. Sharing her thoughts with Mail Online, she shares that she threw the hard drive away in 2013 unknowingly. She said, “He asked me to dispose of a bag of trash, and I did it to help out.” She claims that she was unaware that the drive had the digital key to Howells’ Bitcoin fortune.
She said at that time she was even mad at him for running his errands. She said,” I thought he should be running his errands, not me, but I reluctantly dropped it off at the local tip on my way home from the school run.”
Ever since Howells has been asking authorities to search the Newport, Wales landfill. However, to his disappointment, the Newport City Council has repeatedly denied him access. The council has cited environmental and logistical concerns. Disappointed with the response, Howells is suing the council for Rs 4,900 crore.
He says that their refusal to allow excavation is blocking his chance to recover the lost wealth. However, the council says that digging up the landfill could cause significant disruption and is prohibited under environmental permits.
His ex-girlfriend Eddy-Evans wants the whole situation to end, she said, “I’d love nothing more than for him to find it. I’m sick and tired of hearing about it.”
