What I am going to talk to you about today looks straight out of a science fiction movie. A video demo of a company called Figure featured “Figure 01,” an OpenAI humanoid robot, has been released online. This has left me and many others in awe and disbelief. The demo video showcases Figure 01’s visual recognition capabilities, as it accurately identifies objects and interacts with a human, and trust me it looks remarkable.
When the video starts, a person asks the robot about its surroundings. It responds by identifying items such as a red apple, a drying rack with dishes, and even the person posing the questions. Now this sounds kind of basic, but things take a different turn when the person asks it if it can provide something to eat.The robot picks up the apple and hands it over.
This OpenAI humanoid robot works on a technology called the Visual Language Model (VLM). It has been developed under a collaboration between OpenAI and Figure. Figure is the startup behind the humanoid robot. It is this VLM that allows Figure 01 to seamlessly process visual data and engage in complex interactions with its human counterparts.

Further, it also demonstrated its multitasking capabilities by simultaneously identifying and disposing of trash and explaining what it is doing to the person. The robot had a great conversation with the person, which was also kind of freakish.
Brett Adcock is the founder of Figure, and he said that Figure 01 has cameras that feed data to the VLM. This enables the robot to understand its environment and interact independently. The team has experts from Boston Dynamics, Tesla, Google Deep Mind, and Archer Aviation, on board and they have ambitious plans for Figure 01.
This is still a demo and there’s a long way to go before Figure 01 actually rolls out. But, this video surely gave us an insight into the future where humans and robots might have to coexist.
