First step from video sharing site in enabling users to filter out content based on ratings.

Popular video sharing site Vimeo has now introduced a ratings system for all videos uploaded on the site. Every video on the site will now have a badge stating whether the video is meant for “Mature” audiences or for “All Audiences.” Videos without a rating will be marked “Not Yet Rated.”

In a blog post, Paul Simoneschi from Vimeo explains, “To make sure Vimeo remains accessible to all audiences, we’re introducing content ratings, which let viewers know what’s in the video they’re about to watch.” He continues to say, “Ratings are just the first step along a path that will make Vimeo more accessible to all audiences. The eventual goal of this project is to create a system that enables viewers to filter out mature content, or opt to see only videos that have been intended for all audiences.” Users uploading videos will now be asked to provide a rating for their videos, while also having the option of setting all their videos to one rating through global settings, if they so choose.

Vimeo has had a rocky relationship with India after many ISPs started blocking the site for “piracy” as per court orders. However, the court order was soon lifted and the site is currently accessible through popular ISPs in the country. Vimeo attracts over 65 million visitors per month and has over 8 million registered users.
