Vigilant SBI staff saves elderly man from losing over Rs 13 lakhs to digital arrest scam

Digital arrest scams are getting way more common and scammers are using fear-mongering techniques to scare their targets, particularly the elderly and those less digitally aware. Another such case was going to happen in Hyderabad, but a vigilant State Bank of India (SBI) employee helped a senior citizen from losing over Rs 13 lakhs. What happened? Read to find out.

An NDTV report reveals that a 61-year-old child specialist who was a long-time customer of SBI’s AC Guards branch came to withdraw his savings and liquidate his fixed deposit. Surya Swathi, who works at the SBI branch noticed the victim’s distressed behaviour. He was pretty anxious and was giving vague responses when he came to withdraw money for the first time.

While he was at the branch, Swathi and Kumar Gaud noticed him closely and observed that he was continuously receiving calls. They then told him how this was a scam and they even showed him newspaper reports of the rising number of digital arrest scams.

The senior citizen was told to withdraw the money to settle a legal dispute urgently. After multiple interactions with the scammers, the elderly man realised that this was indeed a scam. He immediately cut ties with the fraudsters.

The man in Hyderabad was lucky that he crossed paths with such vigilant bank employees. But it would help if you were pretty vigilant as these scams are on the rise. Never share sensitive financial or personal details over the phone or email with unknown people. Also, check if the call that you’re getting is indeed from an authority or not and please share this with someone before transferring money.
