UC Browser 12.0 launched with better video streaming and content personalisation
HIGHLIGHTS

UC Browser now has 130 million monthly active users in India, making it the sixth most downloaded app in the country.

UC Browser, one of the fastest growing mobile browsers in India registered 130 million monthly active users (MAU) in India as of January 2018, the company claimed at an event held in New Delhi. The browser, which is the flagship product of UCWeb, launched the latest UC Browser 12.0 that brings support for faster video content, data saving features and more.

With 130 million MAUs, UC Browser is now the sixth most downloaded app in the country, according to StatCounter.

The latest UC Browser 12.0 brings a refreshed user interface along with better video streaming with zero lag and 50 percent data saving. The company claimed there was a 60 percent growth in video consumption through its platform in India from Q2-Q4 2017.

The latest version now allows you to watch videos while downloading them. The browser intelligently switches the video quality and there is a video preview feature as well. Perhaps the coolest feature of the browser is the ability to watch YouTube videos in picture-in-picture mode, which is not available in India on the native YouTube app or in Chrome.

Additionally, the new version pre-loads videos and articles from top sites and there’s new features like smart weather, smart zodiac signs, and some nifty content personalisation abilities.

Essentially, UC Browser is attempting to break the shackles of being just a browser to becoming a full-fledged content delivery platform. The browser will now offer personalised news feeds based on big-data feedback and monitoring mechanisms. According to UCWeb, no one user will have the same interface when usinig UC Browser. If one is interested in sports, the content platform will recommend sports stories while those interested in technology will see articles on tech.

Having said that, UC Browser is struggling to maintain the pole position as the top mobile and tablet browser. According to StatCounter, UC Browser registered a market share of 43.2 percent against Chrome’s 35.5 percent, as of December 2017. However, the market share dropped sharply from 56.9 percent a year before.

UC Browser became famous by coming pre-installed  in low-end budget smartphones. The browser allowed users of low-powered handsets to browse the internet without lags as well as save precious data. However, with budget phones becoming more and more powerful, and Chrome coming pre-installed in them, it is going to be an uphill fight for the China-based mobile browser to stay on top.
