After Google, Twitter also suffered a global outage on Thursday. Confirming the service disruption, the micro-blogging website said system failures had led to the outage that lasted more than one hour, not the rush of traffic around the London 2012 Olympics. According to the latest update, Twitter has fixed the issue.
Twitter further elaborates the outage was caused due to a “noteworthy” double failure at its data centre. When one system goes down, another one is supposed to take over, but yesterday, both the systems tripped at the same time, Twitter added.
Twitter’s VP of engineering Mazen Rawashdeh in a blog post explains, “I wish I could say that today’s outage could be explained by the Olympics or even a cascading bug. Instead, it was due to this infrastructural double-whammy.” He further tendered apology over “zilch” and said the company is “investing aggressively” in its systems to ensure it never happens again.
Twitter announces service restoration
Earlier, Twitter services went offline and showed an error message on the home page of the website. The company explained the outage on its status blog, saying “some users may be experiencing issues accessing Twitter”.
Twitter’s outage came hours after Google’s chatting and messaging service Google Talk went down for hours. Google Talk users across the globe reported about not being able to chat with their contacts, while many complained about not being able to see all the contacts online.
Google, meanwhile, has restored its service for some users. The latest update by Google says: “The problem with Google Talk should be resolved. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and continued support. Please rest assured that system reliability is a top priority at Google, and we are making continuous improvements to make our systems better. If you are still experiencing an issue, please contact us via the Google Help Center.”
