Toshiba launches new 7,200 RPM 2.5-inch SATA drives that outperform 3.5-inch drives

Updated on 28-Jul-2010

Toshiba has been right there at the cutting edge of computer science for while now, and regularly comes up with brand new technology that pervades and inspires the global market. Its Storage Device Division has now announced another industry-first, a family of 7,200 RPM 2.5-inch SATA drives that have been optimized specially for performance, durability, and power consumption. With these drives, Toshiba is aiming to target not only the high-performance gaming and graphics notebook segment, but also the enterprise segment, where power efficiency is of prime importance.

What’s perhaps the most interesting part of these new 2.5-inch drives is that they are supposedly even more power efficient and durable than their current 7,200 RPM 3.5-inch counterparts. The family bears the model name MKxx61GSY, and is available in a wide variety of capacities, ranging from 160GB to 640GB, and also includes an optional free-fall sensor that locks the heads just before impact.
