HIGHLIGHTS

Sam Altman predicts superintelligence could lead to a 10x surge in AI breakthroughs every year.

Altman believes AGI's arrival is imminent, reshaping society and the economy.

Despite AI's rapid growth, Altman assures human values will remain unchanged.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google Gemini are two of the most dominant platforms in the ongoing AI race, as it has had massive growth in the past two years. Looking at the growth and additional features, industry experts believe that Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) will arrive sooner than expected.

For those who are unaware, Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is a level of AI that can comprehend, learn, and apply intelligence across a wide range of tasks. It is often seen as the precursor of superintelligence, which is an AI that significantly outperforms human capabilities. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has expressed his views on the growing rate of AI in relation to AGI.

“If the rate of scientific progress that’s happening in the world as a whole tripled, maybe even like 10x, the discoveries that we used to expect to take 10 years and the technological progress we used to expect to take 10 years. If that happened every year, and then we compounded on that the next one, and the next one, and the next one. That to me would feel like superintelligence had arrived,” Altman said in an interview with the Free Press YouTube channel.

These comments indicate that AGI may arrive sooner than expected. However, some experts have cautioned that AGI could ultimately result in the extinction of humanity; according to a report, a major AI safety study predicted a 99.9% chance that AI would bring about “doom” unless advancements are slowed.

Altman reportedly agreed that superintelligence will change the economy and society, with major changes anticipated in a number of areas. He assured that these developments would not change the essential elements of human nature, despite the disruptions. “What drives us, what we care about, will remain the same, But the world in which we exist will change a lot,” he said.

Previously, Sam Altman’s OpenAI has concluded the 12 Days of Shipmas event where the company introduced variety of AI advancements and features for the users including the OpenAI 01’s successor, featuring enhanced reasoning capabilities, alongside a new $200 subscription tier called ChatGPT Pro.
