The new feature currently being tested by Google will allow certain users to flaunt their in-restaurant food photography skills on Google Maps
In a bid to improve user experience further, Google is reportedly testing out a new feature that will allow its users to show off their ‘foodography’ skills directly via Google Maps. Currently in testing stage, the feature has been made available to level three users of its Local Guides programme, i.e., users who have submitted more than 50 reviews as part of it.
Previously, Google had taken an attempt to integrating food photography and casual dinnertime photography with Tablescape, a similar application, but for Google+. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out for Google as it had hoped. While the new feature is not a standalone application to upload photographs, Google’s emails to users who have qualified to post photographs on Google Maps suggest that it might be a wide ground to collate these photographs. This will also be beneficial for both restaurants and people, as photograph references can garner more interest and give real depictions of how a dining experience might be.
There has not yet been a declaration by Google as to when this feature will be rolled out for all users, or internationally. We hope that it will happen soon, so that we have a legitimate reason for taking photographs on a food table. Because, what’s taste, if it doesn’t look nice with multiple image filters?
