Microsoft has done a recent global study covering around 10,000 respondents across 32 different countries to assess the role of social media and research tools at the workplace. The study found that 46% of the people participating in the survey believed that the access to social media tools increased their productivity. The research also found that Indians use social media tools much more than their peers across the globe and about 71% of the Indian surveyed felt that social media and research tools increase productivity.
The study found that 7 out of 10 Indian workers felt that social tools improved their workplace collaboration and enhanced their team work. According to the study, 9 in 10 Indian workers use email, with 8 in 10 using IM or video conferencing, and about 3/4 of the total use team sites/intranets.
According to the survey, social networking tools such as Facebook, Twitter and Yelp help people connect with each other as well as share feedback easily. The survey also found that employees and employers are much more responsive via social networking.
Some companies restrict the use of social media sites for security reasons as well as to curtail productivity loss in employees. However employees disagree and 40% of the people surveyed in Asia Pacific stated that access to social media tools would enhance collaboration between teams and 31 percent were even willing to spend their own money on social media tools to make them more efficient in their jobs.
