Snap may be working on a drone for more engaging visual communication
HIGHLIGHTS

The company has already unveiled Spectacles that can record short videos and post on your Snapchat account

Snap Inc., the company behind the widely popular Snapchat app, may be working on a drone to expand on its portfolio of products. While no concrete details have been revealed, a report by The New York Times states that the company has been working on a drone to add to the list of products and technology that it owns.

It is not yet clear exactly how Snap may use the drone, or if it will be put to commercial use at all. The company has been known to work on experimental technology every now and then, although some are touting the use of these drones for overhead, aerial photography and video. This can go well with a rising interest in drones, although such a medium would demand active physical participation from the user's end. While we do see the youth taking up active interest in such activities initially (remember Pokémon GO?) the novelty wears off pretty soon.

Snapchat has been a trendsetter in the industry of instant messaging services, being the first to present the disappearing photos and videos format. Since its introduction, the service has been widely popular among the youth, and presented a form of visual storytelling that is instantaneous and always-connected. Lately, the company renamed itself from Snapchat to Snap Inc., delegating the app into one of its products and aiming to diversify the technology and products it can offer.

Decidedly aimed at the youth, Snap's recent unveiling was a pair of spectacles that could record short videos and send them to a user's account. The move was seemingly quirky, offering a unique way of engaging Snapchat users with what they share. However, we're not yet sure exactly how successful that has been so far.

With a drone at its disposal, Snap may be looking to recreate the unique storytelling method that it once presented with Snapchat. The novelty has certainly worn off, with the likes of Instagram and WhatsApp also providing similar methods, with Insta Stories and WhatsApp Statuses. Drones, meanwhile, are being looked upon by multiple industries for varying implementations. UPS is said to be extensively testing drone deliveries, while Dubai may soon be gearing up for drone taxis. While using a drone simply to take a mid-work selfie does sound a bit tedious right now, it is way too early to be frowned upon.

Since the beginning of its business, Snap Inc. has been repositioning itself as a new-age camera innovator and not just an IM service. For such a company, quirky and augmented hardware like Spectacles and drones do fit quite well in the portfolio, but it remains to be seen exactly how eager users are to be so active and engaged in their visual conversations.
